The main process involved in manufacturing powder metallurgy pieces is sintering. It starts with mixing the metal powders in order to reach the required composition. Next, they are pressure compacted into a cast that gives the piece its required shape.
At this stage, the green part is made up of a combination of powder particles that are stuck to each other but not welded together. Welding is achieved by means of sintering, which is a heat treatment that bonds the powder particles at a lower temperature than that used when melting the raw material. The result is a piece with good mechanical properties, a good surface finishing and a highly controlled composition. A crucial factor for manufacturers of parts is the metal powder, as it is essential to ensure the required properties. Factors such as the composition of the powder, the size of the grain, the form of the grain etc., are very important.
Metallied manufactures and markets such powder to make high quality, resistant pieces for the car, aeronautic and welding industries.
